Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive
1980 - 2006
On it's formation in 1975, Strathclyde Regional Council absorbed the Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Authority & GGPTE, but retained the GGPTE title until late 1980, when it was renamed the Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive (SPTE).
The 1985 Transport Act required the SPTE to set up a separate company to operate it's bus fleet, and so Strathclyde's Buses Ltd was formed the following year. SPTE continued to run the Underground.
Government reorganisation in 1996 meant the end of Strathclyde Regional Council. A reformed Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority was given control of SPTE, and it remained the operator of the Underground. Although a shortened title, Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT), was now used.
On the 1st of April 2006, a new body, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, took over all current roles and functions of the SPTA & SPTE. They continue to use the abbreviation, SPT.

Strathclyde PTE bus crews continued to be issued with the Greater Glasgow PTE style green uniforms & caps, however with the re-opening of the Underground in 1980 (after an extensive three year refurbishment), new, brown coloured uniforms were introduced for all Underground staff. These caps still featured the standard 'GGPTE' cap badge, this was later changed when the SPTE title badges were introduced.
